How much does it cost to reseed the Brown Street Lawn?
It costs nearly $5,000 each year to reseed the Brown Street Lawn. We consider this a critical expense to ensure the lawn remains healthy, safe, and usable for the wide range of people who enjoy it throughout the year.
Who pays for the reseeding?
The Brown Street Lawn reseeding is fully funded by donors and community members like you. Your support directly helps keep this shared space open and welcoming.
Can I rent the Brown Street Lawn for a private event?
Yes. We welcome requests to rent the Brown Street Lawn for private parties or events.
Private events are not permitted without a reservation. This helps ensure the lawn remains accessible to the broader community. We are happy to work with you on a sliding scale to keep rentals affordable and inclusive.
To request a reservation, please submit your request through our event inquiry process.
Why is the lawn reseeded every year instead of using a long‑term solution?
We have explored longer‑term solutions such as irrigation systems and synthetic surfaces. At this time, those options would require major infrastructure investments that exceed our current ability to implement and maintain in an environmentally and economically responsible way.
Annual reseeding remains the most feasible approach for preserving the lawn.
Why doesn’t reseeding start earlier in the season?
Each year, Eastern State Penitentiary conducts required wall inspections and repairs. These repairs cannot begin until overnight temperatures are warm enough for the mortar to properly set.
We wait for these repairs to be completed before reseeding to avoid damage from heavy equipment. Eastern State Penitentiary understands how important the Brown Street Lawn is to the community and works closely with us to complete inspections and repairs as quickly as possible.
Are dogs allowed on the Brown Street Lawn?
Yes. Dogs are welcome on the Brown Street Lawn as long as they are on a leash at all times. Off‑leash dogs are not permitted under city ordinance.
Can a designated dog park or dog area be created?
We are not permitted by city ordinance to create a dog park on the Brown Street Lawn. We encourage community members to work with their local council member to advocate for dedicated dog spaces in the Francisville and Fairmount neighborhoods.
